Summer is coming and the coast of Uruguay hosts thousands of tourists from all parts of the world. Traditionally Uruguay has been a resting destination for Argentinean since the early 1950´s. Punta del Este is sometimes ironically called “an Argentinean colony in Uruguay”. Famous characters from TV, sports or politicians have visited and even settled in this peculiar resort. Further East, on the Atlantic coast of Uruguay, La Paloma stands as a lower profile resort usually for those who prefer a quieter family holiday.
Nowadays La Paloma receives tourists not only from Uruguay and Argentina but also from Brazil, North America, Europe, Australia, New Zealand, etc. During the last 20 years the number of visitors from overseas has steadily increased and Uruguay represents now a tempting destination in South America.
The Atlantic coast of Uruguay has a number of cities and towns with a strong identity based on its lifestyle, food and landscapes. Sand dunes, bays, capes, rocks, islands and long beach arcs make one of the most diverse coastlines along 200 km from Punta del Este to Chuy (border city with Brazil).
La Paloma, La Pedrera, Cabo Polonio, Valizas, Aguas Dulces, Punta del Diablo are the most visited towns in the East of Uruguay. They make an attractive destination for fishing, surfing, nightlife, cultural events or just relaxing on the sun. Some of the highlights are the various concerts at the beach, surfing contests and the popular Carnaval de La Pedrera where people gather on the streets of La Pedrera for an open parade where the only limits are your own creativity and strenght to endure dancing till dawn.
